Anti-design was during the period of 1966 and ended after fourteen years, in 1980. This movement was also known as the ‘Radical Design’ movement in the architecture sector. During this period, the movement emphasised on scale distortion and compelling colours. The idea of Anti-design created illusions of functional objects was overturn throughout the object. Also, this movement was against Avant Garde pieces, therefore, the designers started to produce products that were much more functional than the Avant Garde and classified aesthetics the second option.
The Anti-design movement was initially created in Italy, Europe. Designers from this movement designed ideas which were not intended to last long unlike the Modernism. Most of the colours used in the designer’s work were mostly black, whites and grey tones in Modernism but the main colours that Anti-design adapted were a variety vibrant tones of colours with decorative materials.
Like other design movements, the Anti-design movement had its own group of important architects and designers forming and creating a simple design.
Iconic Italian designers:
· Vico Magistretti
· Gianfranco Frattini
· Livio Castiglioni
· Enzo Mari
· Piero Gilardi
· Ettore Sottsass
· Lomazzi
Since this movement affected most the product designers, they created a number of chairs that since they were designed not to last long they ended up being iconic. One of the famous designs was the ‘Panton Chair’ by Verner Panton which is still available in different colours and the materials which they originally used when it was created. The material that the Panton chair is made of polypropylene.

Further development was made by Fabio Novembre which he took the Panton chair and recreated it by adding male and female’s back from when they are sitting. This chair is called ‘Him and Her chair’ that it was launched in 2008 by Casamania. The chair is only available in white, black and red and the material is the same as the original Panton chair.

Another important designer from the Italian group from the 60’s was Elio Martinelli which created a desk lamp called ‘Cobra’ in 1968. Made from white moulded resin, the lamp has a reflector. This lamp is able to rotate to make you appreciate the environment which one is in. With the same concept, a 21st-century inspired group of designers made a lamp with the same rotation functionality in their work. The lamp rotates one whole revolution and adopts the same idea to enjoy the sounded environment. The materials are different from the ‘cobra’ lamp. The Aligned lamp is made from aluminium and rubber coated shades to show the sophistication of this product.
